Flash Power has been enthusiastically used by many teachers in Volusia County, and other areas of Florida, for more than ten years, in the form of workshop materials. This STRIPSS component is scheduled to be published in July.

Flash Power, Photographic Phonics uses flashcard strategies, in teacher's choice of PowerPoint presentations or flashcards, to further develop and integrate the visual-auditory aspects of phonics for:

  • -long and short vowels,
  • -final e,
  • -open-closed syllables,
  • -hard-soft c and g.

Lessons are written to interest the full class of students by utilizing nonsense words and a cooperative-group game strategy.  The use of nonsense words levels the playing field and challenges both the more and less able student, while the program's cooperative-group approach facilitates tasks in which the more and less able students enjoy working together. A strategy of deliberate stages in the cooperative-group tasks ensures unobtrusive scaffolding for the less able.

In addition, within each phonic unit, optional sequences are outlined for increasingly more explicit visual-auditory processing steps in that phonic lesson, which can be used when student need is seen for more deliberate visual-auditory development.

Materials can also be used with small groups and individuals.

Flash Power includes Teacher's Guide with lesson plans and CD of PowerPoint presentations. Flashcards are available at an additional cost, as well as the Student Workbook, which reinforces the open/closed syllable integrated with the long/short vowels.

Five Bridges to Higher Words, Syllable Power

Five Bridges to Higher Words, Syllable Power

Five Bridges, the main component of STRIPSS, uses syllabication as a decoding intervention. Experience shows that about eighty percent of students struggling with word decoding at the secondary level know their phonics but cannot use it because they perceive multisyllabic words as strings of letters. Along with the five rules for breaking words into syllables, the basic phonic and morphemic elements are developed from fundamental level to application at high school level in multisyllabic words.

High Powered Phonics, Word Structure

High Powered Phonics, which is used with students who have completed Five Bridges to Higher Words, uses the decoding strategy of structural analysis to develop word decoding from middle school to college level. HP Phonics fosters the application of the five syllable rules with the visual patterning of multiple prefixes and suffixes.
